By Land
The Retreat is a stunning two-hour drive from Nelson and three hours from Christchurch. Many of our drive-in guests will opt to arrive at one and depart from the other. Blenheim, the Lakes District, Westport and the West Coast are all within a two-hour drive or less, giving multiple options for continuing your discovery of the South Island.
Arriving from Christchurch? You can also take the TranzAlpine Train for a 5-hour scenic trip through the West Coast and self-drive from Greymouth for a 1.5-hour easy travel to Maruia River Retreat.
For self-drive options, we recommend renting a hybrid vehicle from nzrentacar.co.nz or a classic car from Rent-a-Classic.

By Air
Private air charters are available from Christchurch, Nelson, Blenheim, Karamea, and any of the many local airports in the top of the South Island. The Retreat’s airstrip is a well-maintained grass runway measuring 480 meters, sufficient for most light aircraft. You can also choose to arrive by helicopter (contact Rob at Murchison Heli Tours).
